“Period poverty” refers to the social phenomenon by which people are physically or mentally affected because they cannot afford and/or access sufficient period products with dignity due to financial constraints. This can have negative effects such as vaginal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, depression, and anxiety. Period poverty is a challenge that exists across cultures and borders, yet it has long been overlooked, and is often mistakenly assumed to be a problem only in economically disadvantaged countries.
According to surveys conducted by With Red, approximately 9% of people in Taiwan have experienced period poverty, facing a difficult dilemma between purchasing period products and other daily necessities. Furthermore, 14% of individuals experience long-term stress due to the financial burden of affording period products.
In Taiwan, every person who menstruates will spend at least NT$100,000 on period products over their lifetime (averaging at least NT$250 per month). This substantial expense is already a significant burden for the average person, and for those living in poverty, it is an overwhelming weight.
When we first began our services, we found no existing data or research on period poverty in Taiwan to guide us. Consequently, over the past few years, With Red started from absolute scratch. Through hands-on, grassroots efforts. We went door-to-door and partnering with social welfare institutions, organizations, social workers, and helping professionals in every county and city across Taiwan, including the offshore islands. Eventually, we developed a comprehensive service model.
Currently, we serve adolescent girls under the age of 18 who are experiencing period poverty, supporting over 900 cases. We provide long-term, stable, customized, and dignified period products, paired with period care education and regular progress tracking to resolve period poverty step by step. Simultaneously, we empower helping professionals in social welfare institutions across Taiwan, ensuring that the concept of period equity is deeply woven into the social safety net.
You are welcome to support us through recurring donations, becoming the most important and reliable force behind With Red’s advocacy for change.

If you donate as an individual donor and provide your National Identification Number (ID Number) at the time of your donation, you will not need physical donation receipts when filing your income tax!
